Has anyone determined a way to automate backing up the database with a scheduled backup job? Maybe with a SQL Server Management Studio generated backup script? I'm concerned that if I just let a windows backup program capture the database that any open user sessions might cause the backup to be unusable.

You mentioning SQL Server Management Studio suggests that you're using the Enterprise Version with MS SQL Server.
SQL Server has it's own backup schedules. Can't you use that?
