Topic: "Type" Can this be changed on an existing item?

So, yes, the "Type" can be changed, but it won't automatically zero your "OnHand" quantity.
You need to either change the quantity to 0 directly in the item (and save) or you need to use the "adjust qty" feature to zero your stock quantity.

Other MISC items, maybe consumables where you don't want to automatically track the In and Out, can still have a value so if you have 100 of those consumable items on the shelf and they cost $1 each then they have a value of $1 * 100
So you'd need to zero the OnHand quantity to remove that value from your inventory.
