When editing a (long) parts list could be handy to be able to sort all parts in the list (e.g., to identify if a given part is already there). This can be done at the View Indented Parts List/BOM) but there you can just "view" after sorting.

If you go to add a part to a parts list and the part already exists thn it'll tell you it already exists and ask if you want to add it again

Yes, you are right.
However, if you need to "edit" the quantity for a given part (or are just willing to remove it) it is quite difficult to "find" it in a long list (sorting could help on this task).
