If I go into a component part record and change the status of a supplier by checking it as the default manufacturer it will not give me the option to save, I have to make a change some where else i.e. add and remove a space to the description to be able to save it.

That's a fault in the software that was fixed in recent update.
Go to the downloads page and get the most recent version.
