I was wondering if the search field could be extended to comments.
It would also be nice to give them greater prominence, by displaying comments on the main page of an item (perhaps just below the description line).

When looking at the "All Components" grid scroll all the way over to the right and you see the comments column. Click the column title/header and select 'Filter'.
Your second idea to show the comments on the Item Detail window - I assume that's what you're calling the main page of an item? If you look at that page for an item you see a row of tabs just below the description file. The Comments tab is over to the right. It's just one click.
