We are running V4.2. What are the new features in the current release? For example, is an asterix still needed to start a description search?

The main difference, the reason for the switch from v4 to 5, is in the way it connects to remote SQL databases. It allows connection to other non microsoft data servers such as MySQL and MariaDB.
But you asked about searching. This hasn't changed that much. In the bottom right corner of the 'All Components' grid there's a single search box where you can use an asterix to search anywhere inside a description. But v5 also allows filtering on any column in the grid by clicking on the column header.
All I can suggest is that you download the trial and play with it for a little while to se how it feels. But, personally, if v4 does everything you want then just stick with that.
