when creating new component entries how does one check for existing entries to avoid duplicates?

Just open a tab to "Create New Item" and another tab to "All Components" and you can search in the All components tab and switch back to the New Item.
But also be aware that if you try to create a duplicate it will refuse. But remember that multiple parts with same part number but different revision number is allowed.
