Topic: Similar Assembly - copy & modify?
|
By: Leo | Posted on: Apr 24 2018 at 01:55:26 PM | I have left and right hand versions of more than a few assemblies. Out of ~ 100 component parts they have about 3 or 4 which have a left or right version to make the whole assembly different.
I was hoping there was a way to copy the right hand version into a new part number and then delete the few right hand parts and then add the few left hand parts.
for example:
GS66R : Right Hand assembly
GS66L : Left Hand assembly
I tried by editing GS66R, changing the part # from GS66R to GS66L, changing the description to include the work left in place of right, and then saving. When saving I get the question to:
1) save current item with New Part Number
2) "Save As" new item (Original will not change)
I choose the second option, and I have a new part number. The issue is, the BOM does not transfer with that newly created part.
Am I doing something wrong, or is this just not possible? Any workarounds?
Thanks! | |

I assume you copied via the detail window. You need to do it via the Assembly Editor. The assembly editor shows the whole parts list so when you copy it copies the whole list as well.
So. To fix it. First, go back and delete that empty GS66L you created.
Now go to "Assemblies" and open the GS66R parts list in the Parts List Editor - that's the window where you edited the assembly, inserted all the components etc. In that window click the 'Blue Wrench' button and select 'SaveAs' and save as GS66L.
Now you'll have an identical copy of the original parts list where you can make the few changes necessary to create your 'left hand' version without doing everything again.
I'm sure you're not the first person to do that wrong so I think we should make it a little more intuitive. I'll see about getting that improved in v5 | |
