is it possible to change how the ling items are sorted. Current default is by part # but we would like to sort by Material

Sorry. Not sure what you mean by "ling items".

If you're looking at a grid/list of items you can click any column header to sort by that column.

Yes. Click the column header (The cell containing the name of the column) to sort by that column.
